Not all lettuce looks the same, but all lettuce is good for you! Whether you’re eating romaine, radicchio, iceberg, or kale- storing your lettuce properly is important because it is very difficult to can or freeze these greens.

How Do I Store Lettuce?

Washing greens before storing is not recommended. Fresh unwashed greens can be kept in the refrigerator crisper for three to five days. Before use, thoroughly wash greens under running water.[1]

How Can I Revive Lettuce?

“Rinse lettuce just before serving in very cold water. Pat dry with a clean towel. Limp leaves can be revived by immersing in ice water for a few minutes.”[2]

Should I Cut or Tear my Lettuce?

Tear lettuce leaves into pieces when ready to eat. “If practical, do not cut or slice lettuce leaves in advance. Damaged cut lettuce leaves release an ascorbic acid oxidase, which destroys vitamin C. Cut edges also discolor quickly.”[3]
